In operations management, a manufacturing system is defined as the structure or framework that facilitates the transformation of raw materials into finished products. 1. Production Planning: This involves deciding what to manufacture, the quantity to produce, and the timing, taking into account demand forecasts, resource availability, and scheduling.
2. Inventory Management: This focuses on maintaining the right levels of raw materials, work-in-progress (WIP), and finished products to meet customer demand while reducing excess inventory and associated costs.
3. Quality Management: This ensures products meet established quality standards and customer expectations through quality control, inspection, testing, and continuous improvement efforts.
4. Supply Chain Management: This entails overseeing the flow of materials, information, and finances across the supply chain, from suppliers to manufacturers to customers, aiming to enhance efficiency, lower costs, and foster collaboration.
5. Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO): This addresses the upkeep, repair, and overhaul of equipment, machinery, and facilities to guarantee optimal performance and reliability while reducing downtime and unexpected failures.
6. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE): This emphasizes creating a safe and healthy work environment for employees, adhering to regulatory standards, and minimizing the environmental impact of manufacturing activities.
7. Continuous Improvement: This includes ongoing efforts to refine processes, systems, and performance through initiatives like Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and Total Quality Management (TQM).
8. Performance Analytics: This involves gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data related to manufacturing operations to assess performance, pinpoint improvement areas, and inform decisions that boost efficiency, productivity, and profitability.

• Production Planning: Managers identify the product to be produced and establish specifications for the manufacturing facility.
• Production Control: Once production begins, managers continuously monitor the operations, making necessary adjustments as needed.
• Inventory Management: Managers keep a close eye on inventory levels to determine when to ramp up or slow down production.
• Quality Assurance: Managers consistently evaluate the quality of the final product, promptly implementing changes to production to address any issues before customer satisfaction is affected.

• MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is a component of MOM (Manufacturing Operations Management).
• MES concentrates on executing manufacturing processes on the shop floor, whereas MOM covers a wider array of functions such as planning, scheduling, quality management, and more.
• MES is responsible for real-time monitoring, data collection, inventory management, and quality control, all aimed at enhancing efficiency and productivity.
• MOM focuses on strategic planning, coordination, and integration throughout the entire manufacturing lifecycle, ensuring that processes align with business objectives and optimize operations.

1. Value: Determine what the customer perceives as valuable and direct resources towards those activities.
2. Waste Reduction: Focus on eliminating all types of waste, such as overproduction, excess inventory, unnecessary transportation, waiting times, defects, and over-processing.
3. Continuous Improvement (Kaizen): Foster a culture of ongoing small enhancements in processes, products, and systems by engaging all employees.
4. Just-in-Time (JIT) Production: Manufacture only what is necessary, at the right time, and in the appropriate quantity to minimize inventory and shorten lead times.
5. Pull System: Utilize customer demand to guide product flow through the production process instead of relying on forecasts, which helps prevent overproduction.
6. Respect for People: Empower and involve employees in decision-making, problem-solving, and initiatives for improvement.
